“Mostly Harmless” sets out to calibrate a playable digital world to try to meet the dimensional chaos of the body descending into medical crisis through illness, intersecting with the unusual bodily positioning assumed during organ failure and efforts to receive organ transplantation. The work features an immersive installation and a playable video game.
The work emerges from an initial autoethnographic position, which is embodied by the mechanics of Role-Playing Games (RPGs), and the work charts out historical perspectives and more contemporary stories, questioning the existence of the mythical “cure”, the role of a patient’s clinical labour, and inherent bias in medical diagnostics.
Following the video game’s main character, players traverse a one-directional path carved out by illness, where the only way forward may just be through… but no one’s survival can be guaranteed.
“Mostly Harmless” also explores archival perspectives on illness and bodies, surveying and incorporating open-access media from the digital collections of the Wellcome Trust and contemporary global case studies concerning organ failure and transplantation.
