THE DEPARTMENT OF SPECULATIVE BIOSECURITY AND BIOSURVEILLANCE

2021-2022

The Department of Speculative Biosecurity and Biosurveillance invites you to consult on the decision-making concerning our global and national futures.

Our notions of borders, biosecurity, and biosurveillance may be forever changed by the impact of COVID-19.

Many countries around the world are having their healthcare and economic infrastructures pushed to their absolute limits. The Department of Speculative Biosecurity and Biosurveillance has emerged as a tool to imagine what these potential visions of our future may be like and start a dialogue about which ones we should begin to work towards.

As a performance, The Department of Speculative Biosecurity and Biosurveillance invites participants to take part in its fictional department procedures. Participants are embedded in the bureaucratic decision-making, problem-solving, and speculation about future scenarios that society may face in light of emerging biothreats and biohazards.

Topics of the performance include but are not limited to: the presence of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), viruses, gene editing technologies, disease, microorganisms, and more.

The Department of Speculative Biosecurity and Biosurveillance has been feautured and performed at the  Ural Biennial in Yekaterinburg, Russia, Art.ITMO Residency Gallery in St. Petersburg, Russia, and at Mall Anders with the Support of UniSysCat Cluster of Excellence in Berlin, DE.
